Wilson hails "leader" Anscombe

15th March 2018

Danny Wilson has praised "leader" Gareth Anscombe, after the Cardiff Blues star's impact for Wales during this season's NatWest 6Nations campaign.

The outside half has featured twice in Warren Gatland’s starting line-up during the campaign, including in last week’s comprehensive victory over Italy at Principality Stadium.

Anscombe will feature on the bench for the finale against France on Saturday, while Josh Navidi is recalled into the number seven jersey, and Wilson emphasised his influence both on and off the field for his region and his country.

“I think Gareth has done really well. He is a quality rugby player, a quality leader and is still a young man with a lot of rugby in front of him,” said Wilson.

“I’m really pleased he’s been given an opportunity and he’s taken that opportunity.

“There is great competition for the 10 shirt and each 10 in Wales play slightly differently to each other.

“I was impressed with Gareth over the weekend and Wales managed to get a good win.”

“He’s a huge player for us, both on and off the field. Around the environment, he’s a leader and we can easily forget how young he is considering how good a leader he is.

“He’s come from some great environments in New Zealand and my experiences of him have been really positive.

“I think he’s a cracking player and he’s a modern-day 10, which can play at 10 or 15. He has been extremely important for us in massive games, and I’m sure he can fill that same role with Wales.

“What’s important and fortunate in Wales is that we have plenty of 10’s in competition for that jersey. Three are competing for it now for different reasons, and underneath that you’ve got youngsters like Jarrod Evans and Dan Jones at the Scarlets.

“He’s been good for the likes of Jarrod Evans, I think. Jarrod has come through to have an outstanding season so far, and I know he’s learnt a lot from Gareth.

“We’ve got an option of Jarrod, Gareth and Steven Shingler at 10 who are all quality rugby players, and we’re fortunate in that position at the moment.”
