Wilson delighted with long-awaited Glasgow win

17th September 2016

Danny Wilson was delighted as Cardiff Blues maintained their 100 per cent start to the Guinness PRO12 with a thrilling victory over Glasgow Warriors but insists it is still very much early days.

Wales’ Capital Region had lost their last 10 Championship matches against the Warriors but went into the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park encounter on the back of victories over Edinburgh and Munster.

On roared on by a packed house they edged the tense encounter to win their first three matches of a season for the first time.

Alex Cuthbert and Rey Lee-Lo scored the crucial first-half tries as the Blues led 20-14 at the interval.

And despite a Scottish fight-back Wilson’s side clung on and Steve Shingler slotted a late penalty to calm nerves.

Wilson said: "It's very pleasing to beat a well drilled team like Glasgow. It's a fantastic win and a big statement.

"It was lined up to be a pretty compelling game. You had two sides who play, two sides who are pretty positive and who had both come off two wins at the start of the season. The weather was fantastic for the first time this season as well.

"So it was kind of set up to be a bit of a humdinger and it was that.

"They are a very good side, especially in attack, they come wave after wave. We compounded that with a couple of errors that led to tries for them.

"But that's secondary to the amount of effort and the amount of passion to play at home there was from our guys.

"We scored a couple of good tries and definitely tested them, while the defensive effort, especially at the end where we were knocking big carriers back time and time again, was fantastic.

"The players have got to take full credit for a real gutsy performance.

"It's a good feel when you are winning. It fuels confidence. This group of players are outstanding, especially when they are confident."

Next up is a trip to Parma to face Zebre and Wilson is taking nothing for granted following last season’s defeats in Italy.

And while pleased with three wins, he is acutely aware that it is still early days in the campaign.

He added: “It’s great that we have got three wins but it is three games into a very long season.

“We’re pleased with the progress we are making but we now go into a tough test, where I am desperate as a coach to be able to prove ourselves.

“I want us to go to Zebre with the right attitude about tactics, game-plan and mind-set which we didn’t do last year.”
