Wilson bids emotional farewell to Cardiff Blues following historic victory

11th May 2018

Danny Wilson bid an emotional farewell to Cardiff Blues, as his side made history, clinching the Challenge Cup following a dramatic final at Bilbao.

Gareth Anscombe’s last-gasp penalty saw Wales’ Capital Region complete a dramatic comeback to secure victory and seal their second European title.

Wilson, who will move onto a new coaching role with Wasps over the summer, says the win was a stunning way to cap off his three year period with this group of players.

“This group has gelled unbelievably over a three year period,” said Wilson.

“For this group, including backroom staff, players and everybody, to stay as tight as they’ve stayed and to be, collectively, as good as they are.

"We all had one objective this year, which was the end of a three-year period.

“A huge credit for the success has to the group, from my point of view. But to leave this group of players is tough.

“They’re a great group and I’ve got good relationships with them. It’s fitting for them to get the rewards that they 110 per cent fully deserve.

“I’m looking forward to a new challenge at Wasps, but what a way to finish as a group to come away with silverware.

“Hopefully it leaves the region in a position where they can build on it in the future and I’m sure the players they’ve got here, alongside the recruitment, will leave them capable of going on to bigger and better things.”
