Williams points to key Edinburgh clash

20th February 2017

Nick Williams is desperate to see out the remainder of the season fit and firing as Cardiff Blues battle for a place in the Guinness PRO12 top six.

The powerful number eight has been frustrated by a calf injury for periods of the current campaign but has crossed for a try in his last two appearances.

He scored the first of eight during Saturday’s 57-20 PRO12 victory over Benetton Treviso and is now focussed on Friday night’s clash with Edinburgh at Myreside.

Williams said: “You have grind the Italian teams down, we knew it might take 50, 60, 70 minutes but thankfully it took us just 39 minutes.

“We just tried to change the point of contact and use the second-man play rather than front line and thankfully it worked in the first 10 seconds of the half, from there we kept doing it again and again.

“We have players like Nipper (Matthew Morgan), Cuthy (Alex Cuthbert) and Blaine (Scully) who are strong ball carriers in the second line so why not use them.

“We’ve spoken about this block of games - this game, Edinburgh and Munster. The boys will deservedly pat themselves on the back for an 80-minute performance, there will be a few sore bodies and you have to give credit where it’s due and boys like Cuthy (Alex Cuthbert), Corey Domachowski and Sion (Bennett).

“The tables turn now to Edinburgh, they will be hurting but hopefully we can do some good homework and go up there to the Scottish capital and do a job

“Touch wood I remain on the pitch for the remainder of the season and give what I can to the lads.

“I’ve been hurting when the boys haven’t won certain games but hopefully I can get back up and do what I do best.”

The Blues remain seventh in the Championship table but are pushing to break into the top six, which would secure a place in the top tier of Europe. They are eight points behind sixth-place Glasgow Warriors.

Following Friday’s trip to Edinburgh, the Blues return to BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park to face PRO12 leaders Munster.
