Watts-Jones looks to build on Falcons win

10th November 2014

Back row ace Rory Watts-Jones has called on Cardiff Blues to build on the momentum of the epic comeback victory over Newcastle Falcons to keep LV=Cup dreams alive.

Cardiff Blues opened the cup competition with a thrilling second half fight-back stunning a powerful Falcons team 22-21 at Kingston Park.

The result leaves the region in third place in Pool 2 – with a game in hand over pool topping Northampton, who have nine points after two wins.

Next up in the LV=Cup is a Welsh derby with Scarlets at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Friday evening (kick-off 7.30pm).

And Watts-Jones – a second half try scorer in the north east of England – knows Blues must look to keep that winning feeling and build on the Newcastle victory.

He said: “Newcastle came strong while a lot of our team was made up of young guys and first teamers itching for a start. It was good to show what we could do and give the coaches a selection headache.

“We now want to make it two from two and keep our chances alive in the LV=Cup. We will stick with the same kind of team and if we keep the momentum going I can’t see why we can’t do it again.

“We’re very proud of the way we played in that second half in Newcastle,” he added. “The first half we weren’t accurate enough in defence and the coaches spoke about it at half-time. We knew what we had to do and showed intensity and stuck to the game plan in the second half.

“It got a little tense and sometimes you have got to ride your little bit of luck; we had that with two missed penalties for Newcastle. But I don’t think anyone can deny us that result for the manner we played in the second half.

“I was a little disappointed to pick up a yellow card in the first half, but it was nice to make amends with the try.

“I don’t often get near charge downs – I was actually more concerned with my hand because it was killing me! But the ball bounced nicely and I just dived on it quick – I will take that!”
