Wales came agonisingly close to lifting the Bowl trophy in the Emirates Airline London Sevens at Twickenham but in the end had to settle for the runners-up position after losing by just one score to Australia.
Wales began the second day at Twickenham with victory over Spain in the quarter-finals of the Bowl. Blues Forward Andy Powell gave Wales a winning start with an unconverted try and when Martin Roberts crossed for his side's second try, converted by Nick Macleod, Wales Sevens were 12-0 ahead at the interval.
Then in the second half Jon Edwards made the best of a strong run by new Blues recruit Aled Brew with a typical try from the skipper. Macleod added the conversion before adding the extra points to his own try to give Wales a 26-0 win and a place in the semi-finals of the Bowl.
Wales potentially had a more difficult semi-final against Canada but in the event the Welsh Sevens hit form to score five tries. Jon Edwards grabbed the only score of the first half but in the second half four tries flowed, two from Edwards, and one each from Aled Brew and James Merriman.
In the final against Australia Wales had to react to an early unconverted try from the Wallabies but did so positively with a side-stepping run from Aled Brew that brought a try under the posts and an easy conversion for Macleod.
However, Australia added a converted try before the interval for a 12-7 half-time lead, and then increased the gap with a second half try, again converted.
Wales fought back to score through substitute Rhodri McAtee and in the final seconds came desperately close when Brew kicked flat to the corner only for the bounce of the ball to take a cruel direction.
