Cardiff Blues 18s continued their unbeaten start to the championship by beating a good Scarlets side last night at Abercwmboi. Both sides showed the intent of playing a wide expansive game from the start.

The Blues opened the scoring with a penalty by impressive outside half Gareth Thompson. From the restart the Scarlets gained possession and after a few phases broke the Blues defence to score the first try of the evening through man of the match Daniel Thomas. Try converted by Jack Maynard. The Scarlets wide approach to the game threatened the Blues defence on many occasions and they soon crossed for the evenings second try by centre Dylan Morgans, again converted by Maynard giving them a 14 – 3 advantage.

The Blues fought hard to get back into the game and gained a penalty deep into the Scarlets half in which Thompson converted bringing the score to 14-6. Blues eventually crossed for their first try of the evening by winger Lloyd Chalk which Thompson converted. This giving a half time score of 14 – 13 in favour of the Scarlets.

The Blues started the strongest of both teams after the break and soon crossed for their second try of the evening after outside half Gareth Thompson took and outside line passed a Scarlets defender and ran 40m to score a impressive individual try. The Blues lead was narrowed by a well struck penalty by Maynard giving them an 18-17 lead.

The games fifth try came from pressure on a Blues scrum, Daniel Thomas picking up a loose ball and broke a couple of weak tackles to score under the posts. Maynard again converting. Both teams exchanged further penalties to give a score of 27-21 in favour of the Scarlets with 5 minutes to play. The Blues youngsters were determined not to lose on home soil and soon raised the tempo of the game with some strong running by replacement hooker Ethan Lewis. Pressure finally led to an un-converted try by Jack James, giving the Scarlets a lead of a point. Blues retained possession from the kick off and were soon in the Scarlets half with the last play of the game. An offence at the breakdown gave the Blues a last gasp attempt to win the game. Replacement outside half Sam Withers coolly converting the penalty to give the Blues a 29 – 27 victory.
