Three-Strong Blues Go With The Lions

11th April 2005

Blues' stars Martyn Williams, Gethin Jenkins and Tom Shanklin have all been named in the British Isles' squad to tour New Zealand this summer.

Regional skipper Williams will be making his second Lions' trip after touring Australia four years ago. He said this afternoon,

"Obviously I'm relieved and delighted to have been selected for the squad but I also know that this is the beginning rather than the end of the story. Once we assemble for the tour the hard woirk really begins to get selected for the matches and with such a strong squad to choose from we all will have to perform at our peak."

Jenkins has been the form prop of the Six Nations' tournament that has just finished and is expected to make a strong bid for a test place against the All Blacks. Shanklin had also been hotly tipped to be on the plane to New Zealand after his fine form this season.

The selection of the three Blues players takes the total number of representatives for the region, including the Cardiff, Pontypridd and Penarth clubs, on Lions tours since 1899 to a record number of 44.
