Young back Aled Summerhill has today pledged his long-term future to Cardiff Blues after signing a new contract at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.
Rising star Summerhill, who has come through the Academy ranks at Cardiff Blues, made his debut for the region in November 2014 in the LV=Cup clash with Scarlets.
The talented 20-year-old has scored three tries in three appearances this season in the Guinness PRO12 and has now put pen to paper on new terms to remain at Cardiff Blues until at least 2018.
Head Coach Danny Wilson said: “We’ve been really pleased with Aled’s progress and he’s really impressed in the opening months of the new Guinness PRO12 season.
“He is a young and versatile player who is still learning about the game and keen to get better.
“We’re excited that he will now continue his development with Cardiff Blues and look forward to him continuing to kick on in the years to come.”
Summerhill started his rugby career with Porth RFC at the age of six and moved to Pontypridd RFC Mini and Junior sections before joining Treorchy RFC.
He played at outside half for Treorchy and Rhondda Schools until the age of fifteen, when he was converted to centre.
Summerhill, who has shone for Pontypridd RFC in recent seasons, studied at Coleg Morgannwg and represented Cardiff Blues at Under-16 level and Under-18 level.
At the age of seventeen, Summerhill trained with the Wales Sevens set-up and was called up to train with the Cardiff Blues senior side for the first time in the summer of 2013.
“It means a lot to get the new contract. I’ve always wanted to be professional rugby player and I’ve come through the age grade and Academy system here so it was an honour to sign up,” said Summerhill, who has represented Wales at Under-18 and Under-20 levels.
“I’ve enjoyed this season and had a few games with international boys away with the Rugby World Cup. It has brought opportunity for the younger lads, which has been great for us all and a great experience.
“We’ve played well this season and maybe could have picked up a few wins if we can cut out the errors.
“On a personal level, I want to push for a starting place constantly with Blues. Keep working hard, keep my head down and hopefully I will get my chance.
“We have some class wingers with guys like Alex Cuthbert and Tom James. They are great to be around and learn off.”
