Smith: Blues ready to fire on home soil

25th July 2014

Cardiff Blues host the first leg of the Premiership Rugby 7s Series this Saturday evening - and skipper Richard Smith insists his side are ready to try and put on a show for their fans at the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

For the first time since the 7s series was launched back in 2010, the four Welsh regions have been invited to take part and they will open the tournament this Saturday (first game kicks-off at 7.15pm).

The Blues squad that Smith will skipper is packed full of 7s experience, indeed the captain, Dan Fish, Tom Williams and Owen Jenkins all have played on the World Series with the Wales international side.

And after playing in the Singapore 10s this summer as well, Smith is confident that he and his teammates are ready to produce their best in front of the Blues faithful against their local rivals.

"The Premiership 7s is something I have watched for the last few years as have the boys and this is a great opportunity for us to show what we can do," he said.

"It's great to be involved and to test ourselves against the best Premiership sides, but to do that we have to get out of the group first.

"A major fact is that it's at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park, we want that place to be a fortress for us and any game, any team that comes here we want to beat.

"It doesn't matter what the competition is, we want to win and put on a show for our fans, to lay a marker down for the season to come."

The gruelling fitness required for a 7s competition will be a great stamina test in what is still pre-season for the sides involved.

But Smith has called on his side's younger players to prove themselves in the pressurised atmosphere of competitive rugby.

"You can only impress so much in training, the real crunch is when the competitive games start," he added.

"That's when you see who thrives, who can produce in that environment, when you are tired with the quick turnaround of games, that will test the toughness of the players."
