Shingler eyes improvements as PRO12 approaches

31st August 2016

Steve Shingler is hoping to discover greater consistency in his game as Cardiff Blues target a top six finish in the Guinness PRO12.

The fly-half is set to make his competitive debut for the region following a summer switch from the Scarlets and he is determined to develop his personal game.

And on a collective level the focus is clear – to improve on last year’s seventh-placed finish and qualify for the European Champions Cup without setting limits.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash with Edinburgh at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park, Shingler said: “It’s been enjoyable - it’s a bit different driving up the motorway most days but it’s the same type of environment, the same personalities and there’s a few characters at the Blues!

“I played a lot in the centre at London Irish and had an up-and-down, inconsistent three years at the Scarlets.

“I enjoyed my previous spell away from the Scarlets and hopefully this will be the same. I’m here to put my hand up for the number 10 jersey.

“There’s a lot of competition for the number 10 jersey, as soon as I have an opportunity I will try to take it with two hands and hopefully those performances get noticed.

“Collectively, it’s about improving. We came seventh last year so if we come sixth and get in that Champions Cup then that’s good.

“Getting in the top four is an improvement and if we get to the semi-finals we want to go all the way and win it.

“There’s definitely an improvement attitude and as one of the American boys have said, the sky is the limit.

“Our mind-set is being the best we can and if we can achieve great things then lets go for it.”

Wales’ Capital Region completed a double over Edinburgh last season and are determined to kick-off the 2016-17 season with a win.

But they are acutely aware that the Scottish outfit, who were third in the PRO12 at the start of 2016, have formidable foundations.

Shingler added: “They are a team on the rise, they have a South African coach and a good set-piece game."
