Lee-Lo looks forward to derby atmosphere

31st December 2015

Centre ace Rey Lee-Lo has revealed how he revelled in a 'crazy' atmosphere in the victory over Newport Gwent Dragons - and now he is hungry for another slice of derby action when Scarlets visit on New Year's Day.

Lee-Lo – who has now made eight appearances for Cardiff Blues - played in his first regional derby at Rodney Parade and admits he loved the atmosphere of the big game.

The Samoa star made a stunning late line break to help secure the penalty that won the game.

And now he is hoping to line up in front of another massive crowd as Cardiff Blues kick-off 2016 against the Scarlets on home soil.

“The atmosphere was crazy,” smiled Lee-Lo. “Right from the beginning when we were warming up I was thinking ‘oh, okay this is what a derby is about here’.

“Back home it’s not like that. It is a derby but it’s not as serious as here. The boys talked about it and the coaches.

“It was my first time playing in a derby and hopefully I can get another chance to play in more derby games.

“When I went through late on I didn’t want to kick the ball away because it might have been the last play of the game,” he added.

“I was looking around, slowed down a bit and by the time I looked up the full back was there. I was just trying to make things happen.”

Reflecting on the festive period, Lee-Lo revealed it was his first time away from his family at this time of year – but that didn’t stop him carrying out the normal traditions!

“My first Christmas here has been a wet one,” laughed Lee-Lo.

“It was a quiet one with my family and girls. It was funny because we still had a barbecue. I put it outside the house, by the back door in the rain and was doing the meat from inside – just to make me feel like I was back home!

“Back home it is always about family and we have barbecues. Mum sent me some photos from back home at my auntie’s house in Auckland with the sun out.

“This is my first Christmas away from home, but you have got to do what you have got to do.

“I have my partner and my two girls with me and we’ve enjoyed the experience so far – there are good people here in Wales. Training has been good and it’s a good city.

“I’m still learning the game here and hopefully I will get there,” he added. “As a team, the last four weeks the boys have got tighter and we are working hard.

“It’s been good for me since the beginning but results didn’t go our way. Hopefully we can build now and get more positive results.”
