Junior clubs from around the region sign up for derby day

20th December 2017

Cardiff Blues will welcome teams from the length and breadth of the region to the Arms Park on New Year's Eve to take part in the Cardiff Blues Tag Festival.

At least 18 teams from all over the region will travel to the Welsh capital to take part in the competition ahead of the main event.

Junior teams from Pontypridd, Merthyr, Whitchurch, St Peters and Dowlais are among those taking part in the competition, which is being run by Cardiff Blues Community Manager Nadine Griffiths and the region’s community coaches.

The competition also embraces the Welsh Rugby Union's Half a Game initiative, which means everyone will have a fair opportunity to get a run-out and enjoy a game of rugby on the hallowed turf.

Each player will also be present on the pitch to welcome the Cardiff Blues and Scarlets teams out as flag bearers.

Griffiths, is delighted to welcome the clubs to the home of Cardiff Blues, and believes the experience will be an inspiration to the region’s future stars.

“We are over the moon to welcome clubs from all over the region down to Cardiff Arms Park, and they will all play a part in today’s brilliant derby day,” said Griffiths.

“Thanks to the Welsh Rugby Union’s Half a Game policy, every player who turns up will have the opportunity to play on this iconic ground, before they welcome their heroes onto the pitch for one of the biggest games of the season.

“These are the types of opportunities that will stay with these players as they progress through the age grades.”
