Hammer pleased with intensity levels in win

28th November 2014

Director of Rugby Mark Hammett praised the intensity of his team's performance as Cardiff Blues returned to winning ways with a maximum point 36-25 win over Benetton Treviso.

Lloyd Williams, Joaquin Tuculet, Richard Smith, Kristian Dacey and Rory Watts-Jones all crossed the whitewash as Blues produced a powerful second half show to claim the bonus point victory in the Guinness PRO12.

And Hammer was pleased with the way his side responded and learnt the lessons of the defeat to Edinburgh to claim a first league win at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

He said: “The last few weeks we have been superb from a preparation perspective, but I think last week we missed the intensity in the game.

“Tonight we prepared well after a short turnaround and I thought the boys were good in terms of our intensity.

“I felt we learnt the lessons of last week,” he added. “We were more composed and we didn’t put anyone in the rucks so we could maintain our line. We showed good signs.

“We had talked about how critical it was that we got a win. It was important to win at home and hopefully last week was just a blip because we had been going on the up.”

Hammer also praised the performance of the two Josh’s – Navidi and Turnbull – in the win.

“I thought Josh Navidi was very good. I don’t normally like to single players out but he was good as was Josh Turnbull,” he said.

“He was huge in terms of his performance. He wasn’t as visual but the amount of grunt work he got through, with driving and scrummaging. It was good to see Craig Mitchell back too.”

Meanwhile, Blues will assess the leg injury to Gareth Anscombe over the next 48 hours after he was forced off at half-time on his home debut.

“We had Gareth Anscombe come off with a leg injury at half-time so we will see over the next 24 to 48 hours how he is,” added Hammer.

“Sometimes you can shake them off. They are not normally long-term but each player is different and we will see how he reacts.”
