Halaholo ready for final play-off push

7th May 2017

Willis Halaholo is hoping to surpass a half century as Cardiff Blues target a place in the European Champions Cup.

The Blues travel to face Stade Francais in a play-off semi-final on the weekend of May 19, with the last place in the top tier of European the ultimate prize.

Halaholo arrived in Wales in October, on the back of a Super Rugby season with the Hurricanes and a Mitre 10 Cup campaign for Waikato.

He has made 19 appearances for Wales’ Capital Region and despite arriving two months into the season, only Ulster’s Charles Piutau beat more defenders in the Guinness PRO12.

Halaholo now believes the play-off clash with Stade Francais will be his 50th match in the back-to-back southern and northern hemisphere seasons and he is determined to go one further.

He said: “It’s been good, I’m comfortable now and comfortable in Cardiff. I’m loving the environment and loving the support – our supporters are immense – now I’m just looking forward to next season after a good rest.

“Going to France is probably my 50th game if I’ve counted it right so it’s been a long season but we’re paid to play rugby and it’s a good experience coming to this side of the world.

“Hopefully I can make it 51 in the final and then we move onto next season.”

The centre produced the stand out moment as the Blues edged past Newport Gwent Dragons in a frustrating regular season finale on Saturday.

He stepped past four players to claim a stunning individual try but insists Cardiff Blues must raise their game against Stade Francais.

Halaholo added: “We knew it was going to be tough and it showed in the 80th minute as they came hard. It was a tough one but we’re happy to get the win.

“We will take this game, go strong and try to win it to get into the final. We need to take a few learnings from this game (Dragons) and hopefully we can edge to a win in France.”
