Dacey named Cardiff Blues captain

19th December 2018

Kristian Dacey has been named Cardiff Blues captain for the remainder of the season with Ellis Jenkins ruled out following knee surgery.

The hooker, who has made 143 appearances for the region, has already led the team on numerous occasions and takes the reins from Jenkins.

Head coach John Mulvihill announced the decision to the squad this morning and Dacey will skipper the Blues in Friday night’s Guinness PRO14 derby against the Dragons.

Mulvihill said: “Kristian Dacey has been appointed as the captain of the team for the rest of the season.

“We have used Olly Robinson, Josh Turnbull and Lloyd Williams in games over recent weeks and we’ve just found if we can have a long-term version of the captain then it will be good for the group.

“It was announced to the squad this morning, the boys are happy and will get behind him.

“He’s important to our set-piece, he’s important to our carrying game and is a good guy to have around. He’s had 143 games for the region, he’s a Merthyr boy so he’s important to the region and we’re happy for him to take those reins for the foreseeable future.”

Since making his debut for the region in 2010, the former back-row forward has established himself as a key squad member and is the region’s highest scoring forward with 25 tries.

In that time he has also been capped eight times by Wales and been called up as injury-cover by the British & Irish Lions.
