Cardiff Schools Share the Spoils

9th July 2004

Teams of budding whizzkid traders joined battle on July 1st for an inter-schools Stock Market Challenge, co-sponsored by Black Horse and First Campus.

Cardiff Blues and Capital Rugby also lent their support to the event as Development Officers John Huw Williams, Gruff Rees and Mal Scott were joined by Wales Internationals and stars of Cardiff Blues Jamie Robinson and Gareth Williams.

It gave the kids a chance to see their Blues idols in the flesh but also gave them a chance to meet the Capital Rugby Development Officers in a non-rugby environment.

Pupils aged 15 and 16 from all over South East Wales seized the opportunity to experience the excitement of dealing on a live stock market trading floor at Cardiff’s Coal Exchange.

Teams had to maximise their virtual portfolio value by buying and selling shares in listed companies, and by trading in the euro. With an imaginary £35,000 to invest, dealing was fast and furious across the trading pit as the youngsters tried to steer a profitable course through a week of unpredictable, fast-moving world events.

Cardiff School’s put in impressive displays on the trading floor as Cantonian HS came in first followed closely by Whitchurch HS and Llanishen HS. Cantonian High School gained the highest total value of shares, euros and cash at the close of trading, with a portfolio of £287,800.00.

The pupils and teachers were thrilled to receive their generous prizes, provided by sponsors Black Horse and First Campus and presented by Gareth Williams and Jamie Robinson.
