Cardiff Blues under-18 retain top spot after bonus point win at RGC

Cardiff Blues under-18 made it back-to-back bonus point wins in the WRU Regional Age Grade Championship, as they claimed a 34-14 win over RGC at Parc Eirias.

After claiming maximum points against Scarlets last week, to return to the top of the table, head coaches Craig Everett and Aled James named a new-look side for the trip up the A470.

But the 15 changes did not deter the young Cardiff Blues side, as they crossed for five tries in Colwyn Bay to make it four wins from five games this season.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring in north Wales. Sharp hands from full back, Cameron Winnett, opened the space for Rhys Barrett to break the defensive line. The lock still had plenty to do, but showed power to palm off the challenges of Dafydd Williams and Josh Eden Jones to run in from distance.

A close range scrum set the platform for the Blues’ second of the afternoon. Scrum half, Will O’Connor, ran from the base and drew the defenders before shipping wide to Winnett. The full back stepped past the final defender to put his side in the driving seat.

The third try was an opportunity for the forwards to dazzle. James Roberts fed skipper Corben Evans, who released Iestyn Galton with a stunning one-handed offload.

The flanker cut back inside, and brushed off a high tackle from the covering defence to touch down.

RGC replied with a try of their own before half time, with centre Tom Devine running a hard line off Rhydian Williams to power through and stretch to the whitewash.

The hosts grabbed a second after the break, with Dafydd Thirsk sniping over from close range.

However, Cardiff Blues did bag the bonus point, and it was Winnett, once again, at the heart of the action.

The full back made a clean break in the RGC 13 channels, and drew the full back, before releasing Iwan Pyrs Jones. The Glantaf wing had plenty of pace to finish from outside the 22.

Josh Atkinson added a fifth to ensure the visitors went back home with all five points in the bag, as they prepare to take on Dragons on Wednesday at Cardiff Arms Park (KO 7.00pm).
