Cardiff Blues' Jenkins captain's Wales U20s to JWC finals

19th June 2013

Last Night Skipper Ellis Jenkins and his under 20s team secured their place in the Junior World Championship final, for the very first time

In 2012 the team reached the top four in the competition and secured a win over New Zealand for the first time in their history. Wales were determined to do even better and make their way to the final this year.

The U20s have claimed victory over Samoa, Scotland and Argentina at the pool stages, which saw the young side face South Africa, in the Semi-Finals. There would be no doubt that Wales U20s would face a very physical South African team, keen to retain their Championship title.

The match was a nail-biting encounter that saw the young stars fight until the dying minutes of the game. Captain Ellis Jenkins was at the forefront of everything that was good about Wales, with full back Jordan Williams a constant attacking threat.

The Baby Boks headed into the changing room with a one point lead after a try for Irne Herbst but two penalties from Sam Davies kept Wales in the game. Wales hit back early in the second half with an offload from Jordan Williams to Captain Ellis Jenkins who crossed the whitewash. South Africa’s Kwagga Smith answered Jenkins’ try with one of his own, with the boot of Pollard looking to have ended Wales’ hopes.

But they were not to be denied as Ashley Evans’ try at the death, converted by Sam Davies, ensured Wales made the final! Final score was Wales 18- South Africa 17.

Wales will take on England in the final on Sunday, 5:45pm KO, live on Sky Sports and S4C.

The Blues have three captains in national sides this summer with Bradley Davies captaining Wales out in Japan and Sam Warburton captaining the British and Irish Lions out in on Australia with the first test being played this Saturday in Brisbane. The match kicks off at 11.05am (GMT) and will be shown in the Arms Park clubhouse.
