Cardiff Arms Park turf available to supporters

18th June 2013

Cardiff Blues can confirm that supporters are welcome to call into the Arms Park to collect pieces of the turf from the historic pitch

There is only a limited amount of turf available due to the agreement we have with the contractors. Supporters must call in to collect it before 2pm on Thursday 20th June when the last lot of the topsoil and turf will be removed.

Supporters are advised to visit the Taff river end of the stadium and ask for Head Groundsman Bryan Walker who will be available from 8am to 4pm.

Work is progressing well on the pitch with the top soil and grass being removed before the work begins on laying the drainage and gravel ahead of installing the new artificial pitch. The Blues are set to play their first match on the new surface against Sale Sharks on Friday 23rd August 7.30pm kick off.

Speaking of the work, Cardiff Arms Park Head Groundsman Bryan walker said,

“The contractors have been in since the weekend and everything is going well.”

“They have dug down about two foot and it’s there where we can see the problem on why the pitch was not draining.”

“The mud has turned to clay due to the stone being put down during the construction of the Millennium Stadium roof and there was nowhere for the water to go”

“This stage should be finished by the end of this week and then the new contractors will come in to fit the base of the new artificial pitch.”

“Supporters are welcome to come down to get some turf but we must stress there is a lot of heavy machinery here,  so they will not be allowed on the pitch but we can cut out a piece of turf for them as a memento of the famous ground.”
