Blues to celebrate Team Wales achievements

10th September 2014

Let the Games Begin! Cardiff Blues launch the Guinness PRO12 season on home soil this Sunday afternoon against Glasgow Warriors (kick-off 4pm) - and we are going to make it a double celebration as we also recognise the achievements of Team Wales!

Wales finished with 36 medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, making the team the most successful Welsh squad in Games history. There were five gold medals, won by Francesca Jones (gymnastics), Geraint Thomas (cycling), Natalie Powell (judo), Jazz Carlin and Georgia Davies (swimming). Jones was the most successful member of the Welsh squad securing six medals, with five silvers to add to her gold.

Podium finishes were achieved across ten of the 18 sports contested and Wales medal total also included four from para-sport events. During the closing ceremony Francesca Jones was awarded the David Dixon Award as the outstanding athlete of the Games, reflecting not only her performance as a competitor but also as a role model to her sport and as an ambassador of fair play.

Everyone at Cardiff Blues was incredibly proud of the achievements of Team Wales so, as we welcome Glasgow Warriors for our first home game, we have invited them to our league opener as special guests and to parade on the pitch.

You can also enjoy a range of games around BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park with badminton, netball, table tennis, athletics going on around the stadium for you to try and get in the Commonwealth Games spirit!
