Big Nick stars on Under the Sticks

First Team News | 19th June 2020

Nick Williams was the guest on the Guinness PRO14 podcast - Under the Sticks - to discuss his new business venture, the return of Super Rugby and his time playing in Europe.

The number eight joined host Andy McGeedy and regular panellists Sean Holley and Paul Williams for the special episode.

Earlier this week Williams was announced as a new non-executive director of Bearhug, who produce charcoal based joint supports and muscle sleeves.

“I have been given a bit of flack from the boys who say you don’t need to do the brand, you are the brand every time you give someone a catch,” joked Williams.

“When they approached me I almost c**p my pants. Being a footie player is the furthest place from a corporate board room so when they said they would like to take me on as a non-exec director, I’m like they are three words I don’t understand!

“But it’s absolutely great. They pick my brains with regard to the rugby element. I have used their products for four years and they are great. I have been helping them and they are now helping me to get my Welsh on!”

Williams has also been overjoyed to see a return of rugby back in New Zealand, where he began his well-travelled career.

He spent several seasons playing for the Blues in Auckland and was delighted to see rugby take centre-stage with television audiences around the world tuning in for long-awaited live sport.

He continued: “That did the world a lot of good no matter what sport you watch. It was just amazing to see 48-50,000 at Eden Park.

“I was quite proud being a Kiwi for Jacinda Ardern (NZ Prime Minister) for what she has done and showcasing New Zealand around the world.

“I got up at 3am on Sunday to watch the game and support the boys. I was very powerful. No one has been in this situation before and no one knows how to get out of it but for New Zealand to be the first people having a live crowd was extra special.”
