More than 250 attend latest Primary School Festival in Pontypridd

20th February 2019

More than 200 children from local primary schools took part in the latest Primary School Rugby Festival at Sardis Road.

The festival held at the home of Pontypridd RFC and in collaboration between the Cardiff Blues Community Foundation and the Welsh Rugby Union saw 10 schools from the area in attendance.

For many children it was their first experience of rugby with two sessions through the day, in which they were taken through a coaching carousel delivered by Community Foundation coaches and University of South Wales students.

While the children were taking part in the skills sessions, teachers will be taken through a tag rugby leaders’ course delivered by Cardiff Blues Foundation staff , which gives the teachers great drill ideas, games and tips that will allow them to deliver rugby in their schools.

Cardiff Blues Community Foundation director, Nadine Griffiths said: “It was great to hold another Primary School Festival in collaboration with the WRU, with more than 200 children from Rhondda Cynon Taf in attendance.

“For many of the children it was their first taste of rugby and hopefully they will now want to join in further sessions whether at their school or local rugby club.

“They had a brilliant time and while they were taking part in skills-based sessions and games on the Sardis Road pitch their teachers were being upskilled on a course to allow them to deliver rugby sessions back at their school.

“This is the first of three festivals we have planned, with the another taking place this week at the Wern in Merthyr, and the last at Cardiff Arms Park coming up. We will engage well over 1000 Primary School children in these festivals, underlying our commitment to engage with communities throughout the region.

“These sessions are vital both in terms of engaging with our community and promoting healthy lifestyles and the values of rugby.”
