Summerhill debut in LV=Cup derby day

Thu 13 Nov 2014 11:57 Summerhill debut in LV=Cup derby day
Wales Sevens international Summerhill, who impressed for Cardiff Blues in the World Club 10s this summer, is one of four changes to the starting line-up that produced a sensational second half comeback to stun Newcastle Falcons last Friday in the north east of England.

Owen Jenkins is also called-up on the wing while lock Miles Normandale comes into the second row to partner Chris Dicomidis.

The final change sees a place in the front row for prop ace Taufa’ao Filise who, when he starts the game, will become the joint all-time leading appearance maker for the region on 182 games. Filise joins T.Rhys Thomas at the top of the appearance charts.

Academy hot prospects Liam Belcher, Brad Thyer, Seb Davies and Will Thomas are also named among the replacements and will make their competitive debuts for the region if introduced from the bench. A total of 17 players in the match day 23 have been or remain part of the Academy system.

Blues currently occupy third spot in Pool 2 of the LV=Cup on four points, behind leaders Northampton Saints (nine points) and Sale Sharks (five points) and know victory will keep knockout rugby hopes alive.

Richard Hodges, Academy Manager at Blues, said: “The game is another chance for players on the fringes of the first team and at Academy standard to step up to the plate and gain exposure to regional rugby.

“We started with a real positive last Friday against a very tough and experienced Newcastle Falcons team so that has left us in a good position for this derby game.

“A big crowd in to back the team would be huge for us and I like to think the Newcastle result will persuade people to come on down - they will see there is a lot of good young talent within the region,” he added.

“Both sides will have talented players on show and it will be a good night out. A Blues versus Scarlets game on the eve of an international next door – it would be great to see as big a crowd in as possible.”
