Warburton "overwhelmed and privileged" by OBE honour

30th December 2017

Sam Warburton admits he is "overwhelmed and privileged" at being appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Warburton was named on the 2018 New Year Honours list, capping off a spectacular year for the Cardiff Blues back row.

The 74-times capped Welsh international played a key role for his country during the RBS Six Nations, and became only the second man to captain the British and Irish Lions twice, as they toured New Zealand over the summer.

Warburton remained undefeated as Lions captain, as Warren Gatland's claimed a draw against the All Blacks, having beaten Australia in 2013.

In a personal statement, Warburton thanked the various influences on his career to date, insisting the honour is also a tribute to his team-mates and coaches throughout the years.

Warburton said: "I am overwhelmed, privileged and very proud to be appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

"This recognition is the pinnacle of my career as it is not only a personal honour but it is as much an award for my team mates and coaches at all levels as it is for me.

"This wouldn't have been possible without all of the people around me who have shaped my life in Rugby.

"Thank you to everybody who has contributed to my career, in particular, my Mother, Father, my wife Rachel and extended family.

"Thank you also to the Welsh Rugby Union, Cardiff Blues and Derwyn Jones, my manager, for their unwavering faith and support."

Warburton made his 100th appearance for his home region in the derby against Dragons on Boxing Day 2016.
