Nine Cardiff Blues selected for Wales

9th May 2017

Nine Cardiff Blues players have been selected in Wales' summer tour squad to face Tonga and Samoa.

With 12 Welsh internationals included in the British and Irish Lions touring party, interim head coach Robin McBryde has selected a blend of youth and experience.

He has named 13 uncapped players in the 32-man squad, including Cardiff Blues up and comers, Seb Davies, Tomos Williams and Rhun Williams.

In the pack there is a deserved return for Josh Navidi and he is joined by Kristian Dacey and Ellis Jenkins.

Alex Cuthbert provides a familiar presence on the wing, while fly-half Gareth Anscombe and centre Cory Allen, who joins the Ospreys this summer, are also included.

"We've got a good mix of experience and youth in this squad," says McBryde.

"The senior players will be expected to display their leadership qualities, and we want the younger men to show they've got what it takes to handle the intense international environment."

Former Cardiff Blues star Jamie Roberts, capped 91 times by Wales, says leading his country in the southern hemisphere will be one of the proudest achievements of his illustrious career: "I'm immensely honoured to be named captain of Wales for this year's summer tour.

“It's a proud moment for myself, but more importantly my family and a position of responsibility that I will take huge pride in. I'm excited for the new players in the squad as they get the chance to test themselves at this level, and also for the more established players who now have a chance to become leaders in this team."

Wales will kick-off affairs against Tonga as part of a double-header at Auckland’s Eden Park.

The Pasifika Challenge will see Wales take on Ikale Tahi before New Zealand face Samoa.
