Wilson sets sights on knockout stages

17th January 2017

Danny Wilson has set his sights on the quarter-finals of the European Challenge Cup after Cardiff Blues snatched a late victory over Pau at Stade du Hameau.

The victory in the south of France was the Blues fourth from five encounters in the competition and they can book a quarter-final spot by completing a double over Bristol.

With Bath in pole position in Pool Four, due to their superior head-to-head points difference, the Blues would need the West Country giants to lose to finish top.

But with three runners-up spots available, there is still the opportunity to qualify for the knockout stages.

Wilson said: “Ultimately we need to concentrate on getting a win. Bristol will be hurting and they will want to come to the Arms Park and put things right but we certainly have a lot to play for and will be motivated to secure a quarter-final.”

With 18 players unavailable for the encounter, Wilson was limited in selection but he is hoping to be boosted by the return of several players.

Gareth Anscombe, Nick Williams, Kristian Dacey, Blaine Scully, Rhys Gill and Ellis Jenkins could all come into contention if passed fit.

Wilson added: “We have a couple of boys who we will hopefully get back for selection, maybe four or five and with a battered squad that will do us a world of good and freshen us.”
