Competition will be key to success

6th September 2016

Danny Wilson believes he is beginning to develop the strength in depth at Cardiff Blues to enable success.

Wales’ Capital Region kicked-off the season with a 34-16 victory over Edinburgh in the Guinness PRO12.

Several young players impressed in the encounter and Wilson will welcome back a host of more experienced stars for this week’s trip to Munster.

It will undoubtedly give the Cardiff Blues head coach some selection headaches but that is exactly what Wilson wants to build upon.

He said: “We want strength in depth, we want more than one player in each position and Edinburgh was a good start.

“To be able to have Steve Shingler play 50 minutes and go so well against Edinburgh and to then bring Gareth Anscombe on, with all the breaks and impact we know he is capable of, is what we want.”

One area of particular strength is the back-row and Sam Warburton and Josh Turnbull will return to contention to face Munster.

Wilson continued: “It’s pretty clear and obvious the back-row is a real area of strength and competition for us.

“Sam Warburton and Josh Turnbull will also be back so we will be selecting from Josh Navidi, Ellis Jenkins, Nick Williams, Sam and Josh.

“That shows what we are slowly building and if we can get that in all positions then fantastic.”

Backs Lloyd Williams and Alex Cuthbert are also in the running to face Munster, providing they come through the final stages of their rehabilitation from injury.

That would see five Wales internationals come into contention for selection in the starting XV.

Wilson added: “Lloyd also potentially comes back available for selection, he just needs to tick a few boxes. You have Lloyd, young Tomos, Lewis Jones and Tavis (Knoyle) and Dane Blacker who is a good player for the future, it lends itself to good competition which is what we want here.”
