Rhys Patchell insists Cardiff Blues will do whatever it takes to do the double over Newport Gwent Dragons.
The Blues take on their east Wales rivals at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday (2.30pm), desperate to keep alive their hopes of a top six finish in the Guinness PRO12.
Danny Wilson’s side have earned a reputation as one of the great entertainers of the competition and currently lead the way in both points and tries scored.
But Patchell is adamant winning is the only thing that matters in the heat of a Welsh derby.
He said: “It’s a derby and in derby week it gets a bit heated and hopefully it will be a good spectacle.
“The weather didn’t help when we went down to Rodney Parade (21-20 win in December) and we probably kicked the ball away a little too much but hopefully it stays good this week.
“But the game will unfold as the game will unfold. You can have the best game plan in the world – everyone has a game plan until you get punched in the nose at which point it all becomes about winning.
“If it has to be a forwards-fest to get us over the line then that’s the way it has to be.
“Ideally as an outside back would I like the ball to get out more and shift it around? Yes, but the result is the most important thing.”
The Dragons go into the clash buoyed by their European Challenge Cup quarterfinal victory over Gloucester last weekend.
Patchell insists there was never a chance of the Blues underestimating their east Wales rivals but the victory over the Cherry and Whites has sharpened their focus.
And he is gearing up for a typically full-blooded derby showdown in the last Blues fixture at the Arms Park this season.
He added: “The Dragons had a good result on the weekend, a phenomenal result for them in Europe and they played well so we’re well aware of the challenges they will pose.
“They are playing well and have strung some good performances together. They didn’t beat the Ospreys at the beginning of the month but I thought they gave a real good account of themselves.
“They are not to be underestimated, they are a good side, they’re well coached, well drilled and are full of fire every time we play them – it is always a physical game and you come off knowing you’ve been in an 80 minute battle.”
