Cuthbert signs new Cardiff Blues deal

5th April 2016

Cardiff Blues are delighted to announce that Wales and British & Irish Lions wing Alex Cuthbert has today pledged his future to the region by signing a new contract.

Prolific try scorer Cuthbert – who has an impressive scoring rate of 37 tries in just 79 games for Cardiff Blues – has put pen to paper on a new contract to remain at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

The exciting back made his debut for Cardiff Blues in the 2011/12 season – scoring in his first league game against Benetton Treviso – and went on to cross the line 14 times in his first full campaign of regional rugby.

Cuthbert, who turns 26 today (Tuesday), has gone on to shine on the international stage, since making his debut against Australia in 2011. He has made 42 appearances for Wales and scored 15 tries.

The powerful winger – named Player-of-the-Year at Cardiff Blues in 2013 – was also part of the British & Irish Lions 2013 tour to Australia, scoring a try in the first Test of the series in Brisbane.

Cuthbert is currently undergoing rehabilitation after successful knee surgery in Sweden and is scheduled to make his playing return in pre-season for Cardiff Blues.

Head Coach Danny Wilson said: “Alex has played exceptionally well for Cardiff Blues since returning from the Rugby World Cup and we’re excited that he has now committed his future to us.

“Alex’s attitude has always been excellent in my time at the region and he’s a good professional and hard worker, both on and off the field, who always gives his all for the team.

“Alex is undoubtedly a high quality international winger who is determined to improve year on year. We are all delighted that he has now pledged to do that at Cardiff Blues.”

Cuthbert said: “I’ve really enjoyed the environment and culture this season at Cardiff Blues under Danny Wilson and the direction we are all now heading in.

“The players have really bought into the style of rugby we’re looking to produce and that has been reflected in the results over the last six months.

“I’m pleased to sign a new contract at Cardiff Blues and looking forward to getting back to full fitness and the start of next season.”
