Tongan truck Filise hailed by peers

3rd April 2016

Fly half Gareth Anscombe highlighted the performance of all-action prop Taufa'ao Filise after his role in the derby win over Scarlets.

Filise produced a stunning display at Parc y Scarlets with a number of massive ball carrying runs.

And Anscombe admitted the front rower had ‘set the tone’ for the big defensive display, with a thundering tackle early on.

“The man is like a truck,” smiled Anscombe. “He was inside me a few times putting in those big shots and I don’t envy the guys who run into those shoulders.

“He’s a big man who gives it absolutely everything. He is so fit and wide, he’s certainly a hard man to stop once he gets going.

“I really thought he set the tone for us in defence. Just seeing him put his body on the line time and time again spurs the rest of the boys on.

“There was a huge effort from the likes of Gethin Jenkins and Sam Warburton too, a few of the older experienced heads really showed up for us.”

Anscombe’s comments were echoed by delighted boss Danny Wilson after the game.

“Taufa’ao Filise looked like he was 25 out there,” he added. “The front row we had out there were experienced and outstanding. Big Fau was excellent and showing how young he really is.”
