Champions! Under-18s claim regional crown

9th February 2016

Cardiff Blues Under-18s were crowned the Regional Age Grade (RAG) Championship winners for 2015/16 after the final game of the season on Tuesday night.

The Under-18s finished the season with a narrow 16-6 defeat in West Wales to the Scarlets.

However, a successful season that has seen them clock up five wins out of seven, score over 180 points and 23 tries ensured they finished clear at the top of the RAG standings.

In wet and windy conditions in West Wales, it was the visitors who controlled territory in the opening quarter with a strong pack performance in the driving rain.

A powerful driving maul and strong running lines set up the first points of the night for Cardiff Blues as Ben Thomas slotted a penalty after 17 minutes.

The home side, though, slowly turned the tide and hit back with a try from a driving maul, with the conversion hitting the post for a 5-3 lead.

With handling errors mounting in the rain and proving costly, Scarlets edged further ahead with a penalty and another successful kick on the stroke of half-time gave them a 11-3 lead at the interval.

A confidently struck penalty on 46 minutes from full back Thomas cut the lead to five points.

However, the home scrum half dived over for a second Scarlets try of the night, after sustained period of pressure, to extend the lead to 16-6 after 52 minutes.

Thomas saw a penalty kick drift wide on 58 minutes as victory eluded the Under-18s, but they were rewarded for a powerful season moments after the final whistle as they were awarded the championship trophy.

Congratulations from everyone at Cardiff Blues to our successful Under-18s team.
