Young gun Williams signs deal with Blues

7th August 2015

Cardiff Blues are pleased to announce that Wales Under-18 international full back Rhun Williams will join the Academy ranks at the region from 2016.

Williams – who jetted out to South Africa with Wales this week to play in a series of international games – has put pen to paper on a contract to join Cardiff Blues from next season.

North Walian Williams, of Llandrillo and Caernardfon RFC, is a talented full back who has impressed for RGC in recent seasons.

Richard Hodges, Elite Performance Pathway Manager at Cardiff Blues, said: “We are very happy that Rhun has signed for us from the 2016/17 season onwards.

“We have a strong relationship with RGC and have seen players like Joe Jones come through that system and now Rhun. He will now continue playing for RGC this season and with his studies before moving to Blues.

“Rhun is an outstanding prospect who came to the fore as a full back playing for Wales in the FIRA-AER Under-18 tournament earlier this year,” he added.

“The coaches and players from Cardiff Blues who played and coached in that tournament spoke very highly of him as both a player and person so we are looking forward to now working with him.

“We have been looking for developing young full back to come into our system at this age for some time and with Rhun’s signing we now have strength in all areas across our depth chart as we move forward as a group.”

Williams said: “I’m very happy to sign for Cardiff Blues. It’s a big opportunity for me to continue to develop as a player in a professional and elite environment, which is what I've come through in RGC with both their facilities and their pathway.”

“I’m looking forward to the future and what it holds for me. I have spoken to Richard Hodges about the pathway here and you only need to look at some of the players in the senior ranks at Cardiff Blues who I can look to as an inspiration.

"The relationship the Blues have with RGC is key for me so I know I am able to play for RGC in the Championship next season as I adapt to senior rugby.”

“I have the trip to South Africa to look forward to now, which is a wonderful chance to test myself, before a big season ahead at RGC before the move to Cardiff Blues as I look to kick on as a player.”
