Six marathons in six days for brave Oscar

18th February 2015

A Cardiff man is set to undertake an epic fundraising challenge of six marathons in six days later this year- after being inspired by his son's optimism, resilience and bravery throughout his tough cancer battle.

Oscar Rudolf had only just turned five when doctors discovered a cancerous tumour in his pelvis, which was later diagnosed as a soft tissue Ewing's sarcoma.

Since April last year, brave Oscar has endured countless blood transfusions, 14 bouts of chemotherapy and eight weeks of pioneering radiotherapy.

Now his dad, James Rudolf from Lisvane, has vowed to give something back to the charity which helped fund his son’s treatment – by running six marathons in just six days.

All the money will go towards the children’s cancer charity Latch and James will start his challenge with the London Marathon on Sunday, April 26.

After conquering the 26-mile course, the 40-year-old will then start five continuous days of running from the English capital to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff – approximately 32 miles each day.

Cardiff Blues have offered to help James complete his marathon test and he is working with John Miles, Head of Medical Services, and Paul Downes, Head of Strength & Conditioning, during his training.

“Oscar is an inspiration. He is my hero. He is my son,” said James. “I've only done two marathons before, but I was very keen to work out a way to give something back. I wanted to do something a little bit different which would grab people’s attention.

“I found the running very therapeutic when Oscar was going through his treatment and it helped clear my head.
“My run back to Cardiff will start on Oscar’s birthday, and I’ll be joined by family and friends along the route for those five days.

“The plan is to arrive back on Friday, May 1 which will be one year to the day since Oscar’s treatment started.”

Within just three days of setting up James’ Just Giving page, the family managed to raise a staggering £10,000 for the cause. They are now halfway to their fundraising target of £50,000.
