Rees: We will learn from Glasgow mistakes

14th September 2014

Skipper Matthew Rees insisted Cardiff Blues would learn from the mistakes of defeat to Glasgow Warriors - and turned his attention to a response in Friday night's big home clash with Ulster Rugby.

Blues suffered a 33-12 defeat to last season’s league runners-up after the Scottish team produced a clinical final 20 minutes to wrap up the win.

Hooker Rees acknowledged that turnovers – that led to Glasgow’s first two tries – had cost Blues the chance to build on a powerful and destructive forward display.

However, he looked to Friday night’s game with unbeaten Ulster as the chance to put right any wrongs.

“The two turnover tries really cost us and at this level you can’t get away with that,” he said.

“We knew we were up against a good Glasgow team who have made the top four the last few seasons. But you can’t argue that they didn’t deserve it and we have now got to focus on Friday and Ulster.

“It was down to individual error and at the contact area we gave away some penalties.

“A lot of credit has got to go to the boys still, we put in a great shift to stay in the game for 60 minutes But that second try blew us away and it was always going to tough to come back after that.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we move on, we learn from the mistakes and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“We have ambitions to make the top four and you have got to win your home games; that is crucial in this league. We have got to make sure we get a result next week against Ulster.”

Rees was also pleased to see New Zealand international Jarrad Hoeata make his home debut and believes the lock will only get better as he settles into his new surroundings.

“It was great to see Jarrad out on the field today and he is settling in. We will see a lot more from him,” added Rees.

“With the experience he has he should make a big impact. It’s early days for him; he is still learning the patterns and the way we want to play. I’m sure we will see big things from him in the future.

“It’s change for all of us with Mark Hammett coming in. He wants us to play a certain way and it is early days.

“As a team we can move on from this result and we know on our day we can beat the best teams. We have got to make sure we turn up on Friday and get the performance we need.”
