Flawless Davies hails spirit of Blues

1st December 2013

Fly half Gareth Davies admitted to 'mixed emotions' after the draw with Benetton Treviso - but insisted Cardiff Blues had shown all the spirit in the squad to claim two valuable points.

Blues stormed into a commanding half-time lead before Treviso roared back in an action packed encounter in plunging temperatures at Stadio Monigo.

Davies produced an assured display with the boot and held his nerve with a 76th minute penalty under huge pressure to ensure the game ended up 26-26.

“It’s a mixture of emotions after that result,” he said. “After the first half we were hoping to back it up and go on to win the game.

“Credit to Treviso, they came back strong at us and we had to show our spirit towards the end to grab the draw.

“The first half was just what we wanted. We had spoken all week about having a big start against them and we delivered just that.”

As for his late kick, the fly half played down his role and said: “I was just thinking about all the hard work the boys had put in… and to make sure it goes over.

“The boys have been working hard all week and let’s hope now we have turned the corner and we can carry that into the rest of the season.

“I thought the young lads were excellent, both Owen (Jenkins) and Ellis (Jenkins) were great for first starts so they can be proud of how they played. Ellis at the breakdown and Owen out wide really put a shift in. They didn’t look out of place one bit.

“We now want to take the momentum into the Glasgow game and keep building the season.”
