Young and Norster hail Lions prop Jenkins

22nd June 2005

Former British Lions prop and Blues coach Dai Young today congratulated Gethin Jenkins for being selected to play the All Blacks in the first test on Saturday.

Young, a test prop for the Lions in 1989, said Jenkins’ call up was recognition not only of his talent, but his outstanding contribution for club and country over the past year.

“As he has already showed the world on the Lions tour so far, Gethin is one of rugby’s best loosehead props,” said Young.

“I’ve not been at all surprised by his performance on the tour and his selection by Sir Clive Woodward for the first test is the obvious recognition of his talent.”

Young’s praise for Jenkins was echoed by Blues Chief Executive Bob Norster, himself a former Lion.

“Gethin is an excellent player who has played superbly from the moment he landed in New Zealand.

“Everyone at the Blues is proud and excited by his selection for the test and I am sure he will make a good account of himself on Saturday.”
