One of Welsh sports most recognisable figures found a new home yesterday.
The large bronze statue of Cardiff, Wales and Lions legend Gareth Edwards that has been the centre-piece of the St Davids shopping centre in Cardiff for a quarter of a century has been unveiled by him in its new location outside Debenhams.
The unforgettable work of art was created by the Sussex sculptor Bonar Dunlop after Gareth retired from rugby in 1978 with 53 consecutive caps and three British Lions tours to his name.
When the statue was originally completed, Bonar Dunlop was also commissioned to create three busts of the player - one for the National Sporting Club, another for the erstwhile Rugby Club in the West End of London and a third for Gareth himself.
The great work of art in the centre of Cardiff is the most famous statue of all and its unveiling yesterday guarantees that thousands of more visitors, shoppers and admirers of Gareth Edwards will continue to see a fitting monument to him in the centre of the capital city.
