Age Grade Rugby Goes From Strength to Strength

21st September 2004

Another season of rugby in the Blues region is well and truly under way as the under 12, under 13 and under 14 District B squads were announced recently.

District B, which comprises Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, have historically had strong squads and they are hoping that this year will be no exception.

Development Officer Julian McTavish who covers the Vale of Glamorgan commented, “We feel the squad that we have selected this year will be strong as ever. We are finding that since the inception of the Capital Rugby scheme, competition for places in the squad is becoming greater and greater as the children in the district are playing rugby more frequently and at a higher level.”

The boys who have made it into the District B squads will also have an eye on the future as the newly expanded Blues region now boasts an impressive youth development programme with Blues teams at under 16, under 18 and under 20, all of which compete in the WRU Regional Championships. Such is the consolidation of talent in the Blues region at under 16 level, the region has been split in to two teams Blues North and Blues South to accommodate the promising players.

The Blues are supporting development in the region in conjunction with the WRU and Welsh based businesses which include both Black Horse and Crownford Ltd. The development officers who are out in the Blues region are Dale Mackintosh, Chris Ower, Nigel Way, Julian McTavish and Gruff Rees. They are all working together to ensure that the junior development in the region is delivering the stars of the future to the Blues team.
