Capital Rugby In the Vale

11th August 2004

Vale of Glamorgan Development Officer Julian McTavish reports on the recent Under-11s residential rugby camp at the adult centre in Ogmore by sea.

The course, organised by the Vale Rugby and Capital Rugby Development Unit, was the final product of ten weeks of intensive rugby development. Once again it proved a fantastic success as over 90 boys and girls spent the weekend learning the new skills needed to make the progression from 10 a-side rugby to the full 15 a-side games in preparation for next season.

The volunteer coaches made the weekend by passing on their rugby knowledge and tackling rugby exercises with the children.

Julian said “The standard of coaching was very high which showed in the development of both the boys and girls throughout the weekend. The skills the boys and girls developed during the games was unbelievable and it was terrific to see such young children keeping the game of rugby alive. I would like to extend a big thank you to all the coaches and children who made the weekend a massive success”

Principle sponsors Black Horse provided gift bags to be awarded to the most improved boys and girls.
“We very much appreciate the support of Black Horse in providing these gifts. Although it was a hard decision choosing who to award them too, we must give a special mention to Arianwen Denham, Tom Davies, Peter Scott, Leanne Jones and Donna Anderson who really proved their potential and were awarded their prize by Cllr Harvey.

Each child that participated in the event also received a voucher to attend a Cardiff Blues game for free this season.

Julian concluded,
“It really has been great to spend time down here – there are going to be some really good players from this group and I hope to see a handful playing for the Blues in years to come.”

“Its busy month for us in the Vale as district B rugby development programme for under-12, under-13 and under-14s are taking place at Colcott Sports Centre in Barry. There will be more news on these events in the forthcoming weeks.
