His move from Royal London to leading independent IFA support firm Paradigm at the end of 2009 was seen as major loss of intellectual capital to the life and pensions industry and further evidence that the balance of power in UK financial services is shifting from 'product providers' to 'distributors'.

Steve believes that the next five years will turn out to be the most important period the UK pension system will have been through for over half a century.

"At the moment in this country we've got about 100,000 active workplace pension schemes but new pension laws are coming in from 2012 which will mean nearly all employers will be required by law to set up workplace pension schemes and auto-enrol their eligible employees into them.

"Not only that, but employers will also be required by law to make at least a minimum level of contribution to their employees' pensions too. The bottom line is that these new auto-enrolment laws will affect about 1.1 million employers. That means that over the next five years we're going to see about a million new workplace pension schemes established.

The 2008 Pensions Act requires from 2012 all UK employers to make a Qualifying Workplace Pension Scheme available to their employees and to automatically enrol their eligible employees into such schemes; they will also be required to pay contributions towards their employees' pensions.
