Girls Enjoy Capital Rugby Festival

28th May 2004

One of the events to benefit from the recent and welcome British susnhine was the Capital Rugby Girls Festival at the Glamorgan Wanderers Rugby Ground.

The Festival, organised by Development was a of a Tag and Touch nature as year 7 and 8 contested TAG rugby matches and years 7, 8 and 9 contested Touch Rugby matches.

The schools came from right across the Cardiff region with more than 200 girls participating in the festival. More than 30 matches were played during the festival and more than 100 trys were scored as the girls showed of the skills that they have been taught in their Capital rugby sessions.

Eight Schools turned out for the year 7 and 8 Tag Rugby matches, these included Llanrumney, Fitzalan, Glantaf A and B, Llanedeyrn, St Johns, Plasmawr and Llanishen. The four schools that took part in the Year 9, 10 and 11 Touch rugby matches were Plasmawr, Llanishen, Glantaf and St Johns.

The eventual winners of the Tag and Touch Rugby tournament were Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr who displayed excellent rugby skills at all ages.

Nadine added, “It’s absolutely brilliant to get all the schools together and let the girls put into practice the skills that they’ve been learning in the Capital Rugby sessions. We need this sort of development in girl’s rugby as it has not been in place in the past.

“We need to make the game more accessible to girls at all ages as the predominant girls sports in schools are often netball and hockey. With the strong shape of the Capital Rugby model I believe that the Cardiff region is truly making rugby accessible to all children at all ages.

Nadine was clearly full of praise for the teachers who contributed to the afternoon when she commented, “I’d like to thank all the teachers and head teacher who have made it possible for the teams to turn out for today’s event, I’m sure they’ll all agree that the festival has been a huge success!”

Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr will now go on to the National Tag and Touch Rugby Competition that is being held in the Millennium stadium at the end of June where they will carry the hopes of the Cardiff region.
