The Blue and Blacks had made light work of their pool games beating city rivals Glamorgan Wanderers 26-0 in the first game with Richard Smith scoring 4 tries and Cameron Pimlow converting three of them. The second game against the hosts was negotiated with a comfortable 40-7 winning margin.

The quarter final was to prove one of the hardest games coming only 11 minutes after the last pool match. Beddau were worthy opponents and Cardiff held off a stern challenge to win 17-10. The semi final was as in previous years against the holders of the trophy Pontypridd. Ponty held the upper hand in the first half leading 14-7 at the break. That was extended to 21- 14 mid way through the second half but a Richards Smith try gave the Blue and Blacks hope. From the restart Rory Watts-Jones and Sam Campbell, who were both outstanding throughout the tournament secured possession and quick hands gave Sion Hopkins enough room to squeeze in the corner for the match winning try.

In the other pools Rhydfelin shocked Neath to send them into the Plate competition that they eventually won. The strong Army side came up against a determined Merthyr side and when the rain came it was the team from the Wern who were most used to the conditions winning the semi-final 12-7.Dunvant were winners of the plate competition.

The final was to prove a step too far for Merthyr. Cardiff opened up a 24-point lead that was to prove enough. Merthyr did stage a mini fight back, scoring three tries in quick succession, but Richard Smith, later to be awarded Man of the Tournament scored a length of the pitch try to seal the win. All that was left was for Rory Watts-Jones as Cardiff captain to step up and receive the first trophy of the season.

Speaking after the final Head Coach Richard Hodges gave his reaction to the win

'Its a nice start to the competitive season. 7 of the 10 players are new to the club which signifies the new start, the Pontypridd semi was the defining moment in the day as it gave them real confidence, for the first 5 minutes we stepped off them, let Ponty dominate possession then we scored and gave it a good go resulting in a score with the last play of the game. It bodes well but we all realise the real stuff starts over the next few weeks.'
