Nominated by Chris Ower, Blues/Sport.Cardiff Development Officer, Shirley Evans gives up a great deal of her time to skillfully and accurate manage the registrations of nearly 3,000 junior players in Cardiff and the Vale.

Chris said, "I nominated Shirley Evans, Registration Secretary for Cardiff & Vale Junior District Association, because of her many years of voluntary service.

"Shirley no longer has children involved within junior rugby, which is often a motivator for people to volunteer, and yet she has worked an administrative role for many years tirelessly and without thanks. The role is essential towards the successful administration and running of mini and junior rugby with Cardiff & Vale."

Shirley said, "I became involved with rugby when my two sons started playing for Llandaff North.

"My eldest, Matthew, started when he was 9 years old, so that would have been 1986. My youngest son, James, then started playing when he was nine.

"We as a family continued to support James as he continued playing for Llandaff North and Matthew moved on to Whitchurch Youth, while my Brother, Peter, was kept busy doing Cardiff & Vale registrations.

"I inherited the task of Registrations Secretary when my Brother sadly passed away in 2001. It seemed like a mammoth task at the time, as I didn't even know how to use a PC, let alone knew anything about spreadsheets and data management, but I soon got the hang of it, and have continued to be involved with rugby as Registration Secretary even though both of my boys have since finished playing altogether, due to both work and family commitments of their own.

"I can't believe I've been doing it for 10 years!"

As part of his prize from the Cardiff Blues, Shirley received Diamond category Cardiff Blues tickets for 3 people for the Munster game, as well as a pre-match banquet in the VIP restaurant at the stadium. The prize also includes high street shopping vouchers.

Paul Watson, CEO Cassidian UK, a division of EADS, was on hand to present the Award, he added: "Congratulations to Shirley, who is a thoroughly deserving recipient of this award. Grass roots rugby is a fundamental part of making the Blues a winning region on a world stage, and without the help and support of people like Shirley who go the extra mile in their own time, this would not be possible."
