The winning bid followed an inspection of the city by a team of delegates from Europe.
During the visit they took a tour of some of the city's sporting facilities including Cardiff International White Water and Cardiff City Stadium.
It was recognised that Cardiff has firmly established itself as a leading city for sport, offering state of the art stadiums and facilities including the Millennium Stadium, SWALEC Stadium and Cardiff International Sport Stadium.
The title of European Capital of Sports recognises the city's commitment to providing sport as a social function whilst using it to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of its citizens.
Cardiff has played host to many national and international events, including the Ashes, Rugby World Cup and FA Cup finals, helping to secure a worldwide audience of millions.
The Judges were particularly impressed with the support of grassroots sport through its Sport.Cardiff programme helping to train and deploy hundreds of coaches into schools, sports clubs and communities and has provided over 350,00 participatory opportunities.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Rodney Berman said: "There is no denying the city already has a fantastic sporting pedigree.
"We have successfully delivered several large sporting events, established a leading grass roots sports programme and have some fantastic first class sports venues. Our approach to the development of sport through both the Private and Voluntary sectors has been heralded by the Judges as a best case example for Europe.
"Cardiff is an ambitious city and this will be a huge boost not only further heightening our status as a top sporting destination but underlining our commitment to sport as a way of promoting health and wellbeing."
Executive Member for Sport Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: "To be awarded European Capital of Sports recognises the city's investment of time and money to establish a successful sporting infrastructure and our dedication to ensuring there is access for sport to all."
"We should be both proud of the recognition and excited by what the future holds for sporting opportunities in the capital."
President of ACES, Gianfrancesco Lupattelli said: "Cardiff is a wonderful city with a genuine ambition to use sport to improve and change the lives of its citizens, there is a real connection between facility development, major events and grass roots school and community sport, the award for Cardiff is well deserved and they can now join a growing network of European Capitals and Cities"
ENWI CAERDYDD YN BRIFDDINAS CHWARAEON EWROP
Mae Caerdydd wedi llwyddo i gipio'r teitl mawreddog - Prifddinas Chwaraeon Ewrop 2014.
Cafodd y cyhoeddiad ei wneud gan swyddogion Cymdeithas Prifddinasoedd Chwaraeon Ewrop mewn digwyddiad a gynhaliwyd yn Valencia yr wythnos hon.
Dyfarnwyd y teitl i Gaerdydd yn dilyn ymweliad â'r ddinas gan dîm o gynrychiolwyr o Ewrop.
Yn ystod yr ymweliad bu'r cynrychiolwyr yn teithio o gwmpas cyfleusterau chwaraeon yn y ddinas gan gynnwys Canolfan D?r Gwyn Ryngwladol Caerdydd a Stadiwm Dinas Caerdydd.
Cydnabuwyd bod Caerdydd wedi hen sefydlu ei hun fel dinas flaenllaw o ran chwaraeon, gan gynnig y stadia a'r cyfleusterau diweddaraf un gan gynnwys Stadiwm y Mileniwm, Stadiwm SWALEC a Stadiwm Chwaraeon Rhyngwladol Caerdydd.
Mae'r teitl Prifddinas Chwaraeon Ewrop yn cydnabod ymrwymiad y ddinas i ddarparu chwaraeon fel swyddogaeth gymdeithasol a'i ddefnyddio i wella ansawdd bywyd a lles ei dinasyddion yr un pryd.
Mae Caerdydd wedi cynnal llawer o ddigwyddiadau cenedlaethol a rhyngwladol, gan gynnwys cystadleuaeth y Lludw, Cwpan Rygbi'r Byd a rowndiau terfynol Cwpan yr FA, gan ddenu cynulleidfa fyd-eang o filiynau o bobl.
Roedd y beirniaid wedi cael eu plesio'n arw â'r gefnogaeth i chwaraeon ar lawr gwlad drwy raglen Chwaraeon.Caerdydd sy'n helpu i hyfforddi a phenodi cannoedd o hyfforddwyr i weithio mewn ysgolion, clybiau chwaraeon a chymunedau ac wedi darparu mwy na 350,000 o gyfleoedd cyfranogol.
Dywedodd Arweinydd Cyngor Caerdydd, y Cynghorydd Rodney Berman: "Does dim gwadu'r ffaith fod y ddinas yn ganolfan chwaraeon o dras.
"Rydym wedi cynnal sawl digwyddiad chwaraeon o bwys yn llwyddiannus, wedi sefydlu rhaglen chwaraeon flaenllaw ar lawr gwlad ac mae gennym ganolfannau chwaraeon sydd gyda'r gorau. Mae ein dull o ddatblygu chwaraeon dwy'r sectorau Preifat a Gwirfoddol wedi cael ei henwi gan y Beirniaid fel yr enghraifft orau yn Ewrop.
"Mae Caerdydd yn ddinas uchelgeisiol a bydd hyn yn hwb mawr nid yn unig i'n statws fel cyrchfan chwaraeon o bwys ond o ran tanlinellu ein hymrwymiad i chwaraeon fel dull o hybu iechyd a lles.
Dywedodd Aelod Gweithredol Chwaraeon, Hamdden a Diwylliant, y Cynghorydd Nigel Howells: "Mae dyfarnu teitl Prifddinas Chwaraeon Ewrop i Gaerdydd yn cydnabod buddsoddiad y ddinas o ran amser ac arian i sefydlu strwythur chwaraeon llwyddiannus a'n hymroddiad ni i sicrhau chwaraeon sy'n hygyrch i bawb."
"Dylem deimlo balchder ein bod wedi cael ein cydnabod a chael ein cyffroi wrth i ni edrych ymlaen at ddyfodol cyfleoedd chwaraeon yn y brifddinas."
Dywedodd Llywydd Cymdeithas Prifddinasoedd Chwaraeon Ewrop, Gianfrancesco Lupattelli : "Mae Caerdydd yn ddinas ardderchog ag uchelgais gwirioneddol i ddefnyddio chwaraeon i wella a newid bywydau ei dinasyddion. Mae cysylltiad dilys yn bodoli rhwng datblygu cyfleusterau, digwyddiadau mawr a chwaraeon ysgol a chymuned ar lawr gwlad. Mae Caerdydd yn haeddu'r teitl a nawr gall y ddinas ymuno â rhwydwaith gynyddol o Brifddinasoedd a Dinasoedd yn Ewrop."
