Maesteg RFC, Wednesday 4th March 2009
In a tense opening the Blues started the better and kept hold of the ball well with a series of strong drives through the forwards. Centre Lee Davies (Beddau) was called upon as early as the 3rd to successfully slot penalty in front of the posts to take an early lead and settle a few nerves.
Carmarthenshire from the restart immediately put pressure on the Blues and attacked well through their forward s and backs. From a Carmarthenshire attack inside the blues 22 Luke John (Beddau) gambled and intercepted a pass to race 80 metres to score a fantastic try in the corner.
This undoubtedly stunned Carmarthenshire who upped their game considerably and hammered at the Blues line looking for a score before half time and if it wasn't for the fact that their kickers left their boots on the bus this could have been a totally different encounter.
Carmarthenshire did manage to get on the score board eventually through Carmarthen Athletic outside half Dominic Setaro penalty. Lee Davies added another penalty to go into the break 11-3.
Half Time Blues North 11 Carmarthenshire 3
Carmarthenshire couldn't have wished for a better start to the second half. Within in the opening minutes openside flanker Callum Evans gathered the ball from a loose Blues throw in to crash over unopposed to bring the score to 11-8.
Trailing by just a few points Carmarthenshire must have fancied their chances to claw their way back into the game and really tested the Blues defence with Felinfoel winger Rhys Phillips making some good runs. But they simply didn't have the ball long enough to threaten and crack the blues defence with flanker Ollie Bastable particularly impressive.
For a period in the second half the blues seemed to squander chance after chance which frustrated both players and coaches. With the clock ticking and the game now in the closing stages the blues found themselves in their own half defending once again but they would not be denied and managed to hold out for a well deserved win.
Mark Rees said 'they have been fantastic all season and showed tremendous commitment to this team and to see them win the final is just fantastic'.
