The Vale started very well against a noticeably larger Rhymney set of forwards with a crunching tackle by Ben Jones to set the scene and after pinching the ball on the deck by Haaris Kahn and Rhys Delucia they recycled for 5 phases, the ball was shipped quickly to Rhodri Davies to run hard to score near the posts, with Jake Griffiths converting, 7 nil to the Vale.

The Vale second try came as a result of Rhymney not kicking the restart 10 metres and from the resulting scrum the Vale backs kept ball in hand well after Bevan switching direction and again feeding Rhodri Davies who bumped off the opposition defender to pop to the supporting Haaris Kahn who dived in to score. Griffiths converted again, 14 nil to the Vale.

Directly from the restart Fin Davies and Jack Little worked the ball to Delucia who drove more than 10 metres with Rhymney forwards hanging off him. Cameron Roy and Sam Corkhill joined the forward momentum to make sure Vale kept possession and Ioan Williams fed Harrison Ashby who sped down the left hand touchline, going close to score again. The Vale lost the ball in contact and Rhymney cleared their lines only for the Vale to hit back from the resulting lineout with Jack Roberts clearing up loose ball and eventually feeding Bevan Howell who broke and passed well for his fellow centre, Rhydian Williams to be on hand to score. Griffiths converted once again, 21 nil to the Vale.

Rhymney were feeling the pressure with the Vale backs and forwards showing their running and passing skills to keep the ball alive and with the speedy service of Ioan Williams off both left and right hands, he kept the backline going forward at pace. From one of these passing movements, after a power play by Griffiths, Roy and Kahn another try was conceded by Rhymney, as Williams again showed his pace to score under the posts with Griffiths converting once again. Half time score 28 nil to the Vale.

Changes were made at half time, as Max Lucas, Oliver Rowbottom, Rhys Jones, Saul Connelly, Ellis Simon and Iestyn Raven were exumed from their mummified sub suits to cause more mayhem for the Rhymney defenders.

The Rhymney players were still fighting for their first score of the match but the Vale had other ideas with determined tackling and purposeful running by Ben Jones, Rhys Jones and left winger Iestyn Raven, who looked dangerous with ball in hand.

Most of the second half became a battle with both defences working well to cancel out any attacks by their opposition. The Rhymney forwards worked well to contain the Vale forward power until the Vale had a scrum 15 metres out which went across the backline at speed by Rhys Bradshaw, recycled well for Vale captain Delucia to crash over. 33 nil to the Vale.

Rhymney were not to be outdone and when they managed to keep the ball for a number of forward drives, tackled well by Connelly and Simon, they made ground into the Vale 22 and instead of releasing their backs they kept it tight, "sticking it up the jumper" well, involving all their forwards, for prop Yendle to score near the posts, which proved to be the last score of the match.

A convincing win overall for the Vale in preparation for next week's DC Thomas Cup match which should leave coaches Mottram and Golding scratching their heads even more than usual over their next team selection.

In the Old Pens clubhouse during the aftermatch socialising both team captains thanked the opposition for such a hard fought match, also the referee, Mr. Rob Harrison, the Old Penarthians for staging the match, caterers, coaches and supporters.
