After more than 10 years of outstanding service to Cardiff RFC and Cardiff Blues, Martyn Williams has deservedly been granted a Testimonial Year which will run from January to December 2010.
"The Spirit of Wales" Testimonial Year will be a Testimonial Year with a difference. The aim is not only to celebrate the achievements of this great Welsh icon, but Martyn wishes to take this opportunity to celebrate Welsh success in the arts, business, entertainment, food, music, politics and sports and make the whole year a celebration of Wales.
The Endgame Group are responsible for the organisation and administration of the year, and will be creating a unique calendar of events of the highest quality to raise money for the Testimonial Fund and for Martyn's nominated charities, the NSPCC and Velindre Cancer Centre.
The following high profile Patrons have been appointed for each of the 7 areas that the Testimonial Year will celebrate, and have now become The Spirit of Wales ambassadors:
Arts: Rhian ap Gruffydd, Business: Peter Thomas, Entertainment: Ioan Gruffudd,
Food: Bryn Williams, Music: James Dean Bradfield, Politics: Kim Howells and Sport: Ian Woosnam.
The Spirit of Wales events will serve as constant reminders of the success that Wales and Welsh people continue to enjoy around the world and will celebrate their successes with Martyn's own achievements for the Cardiff Blues.
The Endgame Group have prepared a programme of events for the Testimonial, with the year being kicked off in fine style on Thursday 4th February 2010 with an exclusive black-tie event at the Rose Suite in Twickenham Stadium. This is just two days before Wales take on England in the first match of the 6 Nations campaign, and will be attended by a number of the Welsh players.
Martyn, Warren Gatland and an England Great will participate in a Q&A session following dinner, and entertainment will be provided by leading Welsh comedian, Rod Woodward. The ticket price also includes unlimited quality beer and wine. Further details of this event are available by contacting Cara Roberts of the Endgame Group on 029 2066 3129 or at email@example.com.
The first Wales-based event will be held in early March, and will be a golf day followed by an evening dinner. Full details of this event will be released shortly.
Speaking of the Testimonial Year Cardiff Blues Chairman Peter Thomas said, "There are very few players who can be described as truly world class but Martyn is certainly one of those."
"The Cardiff Blues are delighted to grant a testimonial year to Martyn for all his service to rugby in Wales."
"His commitment, courage, vision and understanding of the game are second to none."
"However, one of the things I admire most about Martyn is his consistency. In all my years of watching Martyn play, I do not think I've ever seen him have a bad game. "
"Despite all his achievements on the pitch with the Blues and Wales, Martyn has remained a very modest and approachable man."
