Cardiff Blues were deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of former Cardiff RFC stalwart Mike Budd last week.

Mike started his career at St Joseph's RFC before moving on to Bridgend, Cardiff and briefly Newport. The former open-side flanker was also capped at Wales Youth and Wales A level, and was a tenacious but skillful performer throughout his distinguished career.

 After retiring from the game Mike worked for technology company Canon for 16 years.

Mike, who was a former pupil of St Peter's Roman Catholic School, leaves a wife, Deborah, and two sons, Keiron and Leighton.

Cardiff Blues CEO, Robert Norster expressed the collective shock felt by so many rugby colleagues and supporters on hearing of the tragic death of the ever popular flanker;

 "Mike's tragic passing has hit very hard at many in our rugby community. He was a very popular character who was a regular visitor to both the Arms Park and the Cardiff City Stadium and we are all deeply saddened by the news.

He made a huge contribution to Cardiff RFC, and was arguably one of the best and most consistent open-side forwards of his era never to be capped by Wales.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Deborah and their two sons, Keiron and Leighton, and the entire family at this very challenging time."
