Sir Chris Hoy pedalled for Cardiff at a momentous fundraising event at Cardiff City Stadium this Thursday, 20th August. The Olympic medal winner was joined by Cardiff Blues hooker Gareth Williams, as well as representatives from Cardiff City and Cardiff Devils and colleagues and customers from Asda on Leckwith Road to take part in a sponsored bike ride to raise money for Asda's Pedal Power.

Despite the heavens opening at the moment when Sir Chris Hoy, Ambassador of Asda's Pedal Power, officially opened the event with the first lap around the stadium, participants braved the weather and the ride was a storming success.

Asda Leckwith Road's colleagues and customers are jumping in the saddle to raise money and help make cycling accessible and affordable for everyone. Pedal Power is Asda's national campaign which culminates in the supermarket's Chief Executive, Andy Bond, cycling the length of mainland Britain in a bid to raise £1 million, whilst Asda locally hopes to raise more than their fair share in Cardiff!

Bikes on the day were supplied by Buzz, a local social enterprise, which is a self-governing organisation run by a group of 10 to 16 year olds. Buzz runs a shop on High Street in Cardiff where they maintain and hire bikes.

Gwynfor Evans, Blaina Community First Youth Co-ordinator said: "Asda has given the Buzz boys an amazing opportunity to get involved with what has been a fantastic event. They have had the chance in a life time to meet Sir Chris Hoy and get some advice from a true expert.

"It really is an opportunity that money can't buy and the boys have actually been paid for it! It is also great for Buzz's portfolio to be able to say that they have provided for an event of this size and for such a cycling hero!"

Asda Leckwith Road General Store Manager, Tony Humphreys, says: "I was very excited about seeing everyone come together to put their power behind the pedals! It?s great the local players agreed to take some time out from the sports they excel at and give another one a go for a good cause. I hope customers and colleagues enjoyed having the opportunity to cycle with Sir Chris Hoy and local heroes whilst supporting charity.

The money raised will be distributed by the Bike Club consortium, a group of charities led by CTC - the UK's national cyclists' organisation - to set up community Bike Clubs across the UK for young people and families alike. Over the next three years the consortium will set up over 300 community cycling projects which aim to introduce cycling to 30,000 young people. Each bike club will be different, reflecting the needs of the local community where it is set up.

Sir Chris Hoy, said: "I have always loved riding my bike and it's great to see so many more people taking up cycling since the Beijing Olympics. There has definitely been a renewed interest in the sport and cycling in general, but for many people there are still barriers, such as a lack of confidence, education or equipment, and that's what Pedal Power is aiming to tackle."
